 Frank Finnegan has spent a career focused on
helping those in need. Since 1989, as executive director of the St. Louis Area Foodbank,
he has overseen an operation that provides food to the hungry in both eastern Missouri and
southwestern Illinois.During his tenure at the St.
Louis Area Foodbank, Finnegan has helped implement programs that have nearly doubled the
organization’s food distribution – from 5.9 million pounds in 1988 to 11.5
million in 2002. He has helped position the St. Louis Area Foodbank as a premier
hunger-relief organization and has seen it grow to become the 20th largest
non-profit agency in St. Louis1 while continuing to keep annual administrative
costs at 3 percent.2
Recognized as a hunger advocate on both a local and
national level, Finnegan has been featured on numerous media outlets including National
Public Radio (NPR) and a one-on-one live interview
with Katie Couric during NBC's Today show.
Finnegan’s non-profit experience is varied. Prior to
joining the Foodbank, he held positions with the United Way of Greater St. Louis, the City
of Phoenix, Arizona – where he provided services to the elderly and the homeless, and
the Rainbow Retreat – an organization aiding abused women and children.
At the St. Louis Area Foodbank, Finnegan now addresses
hunger issues from legislation to food donations – co-organizing food drives such as
"Scouting for Food," and the "National Association of Letter Carriers’
food drive."
In addition to his employment with the St. Louis Area
Foodbank, Finnegan serves on the Board of Directors for the Federal Emergency Management
Agencies (FEMA) in St. Louis City, St. Louis County and Jefferson County as well as the
Board of the national Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) association [news release]. He has also served on the
Board of Directors for America’s Second Harvest – the nation’s largest
hunger-relief organization, with 200 food banks and food-rescue programs.
A native of St. Louis, Finnegan received his Bachelor of
Arts degree in sociology from the University of Missouri at Columbia, and a Master’s
degree in public administration from Golden Gate University in San Francisco.
He and his wife have one daughter and live in Webster
Groves, Missouri.
